When I first set foot in the world of new construction, 17 years ago, it felt like home. My journey began in South Carolina, but life had a different plan – it whisked us to Texas. With the move, came the birth of Daly Gentry Designs, my very own venture. With my love for new construction projects and a vision in my heart, I was ready to make my mark. But there was one little problem: I had no connections, no well-established process, and no idea how to get things rolling.
Why was it that despite my enthusiastic approaches, I couldn’t hit it off with the builders? It was like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces. I had collaborated with builders before, and it was always a rewarding experience. So, the question was: how could I become their go-to referral partner?
Then it hit me. I had been so busy selling myself that I’d forgotten what they were really looking for. They didn’t want another sales pitch. They needed a partner; someone separate from their business to ease their workload and take care of their client. They were looking for a well-defined process that would not only make their lives easier but also provide tangible benefits for their clients.
Thus, the idea for Five Star Builder Relationships was born. I developed a marketing book that spoke not about me, but about how I could make the builder’s job easier. It outlined a process that was in sync with the builder’s needs, addressing their pain points and providing a detailed Spec Book for a seamless build.
After getting everything in order, it was time to get personal. I arranged meetings, engaged in meaningful conversations, and got to know them better. Who doesn’t like talking about themselves, right? I wanted to understand their processes and how they worked with clients. The goal was to find a builder partner that I could confidently vouch for to my clients.
It wasn’t a walk in the park, and success didn’t knock on my door overnight. But after a year of perseverance, the first call came. From that point on, things started falling into place. I went from earning thousands to making hundreds of thousands in design fees per a job, my phone stopped ringing with emergencies, and I became the preferred referral for large, complex builds.
My business has completely changed and creativity has come back full force. I love having a focused number of projects a year. My clients are very well taken care of, and we are able to present very creative well designed projects.
